POEM(s) IN PROGRESS: SUMMIT SERIES HAIKU

As you likely know if you’ve watched / read / listened to / surfed  any Canadian sports media outlets in the last few weeks, we’re right around the 40th anniversary of the famous 1972 Summit Series between Canada and Russia. I’ve always been fascinated by it. I was born a couple years AFTER it occurred, but it’s still had a special place in my understanding of hockey’s [place in our cultural consciousness for all the reasons you might suspect.

In any case, watching a replay of the final game of the series (game 8 in Moscow), I found myself disappointed (for the first time) in the quality of the hockey itself, no disrespect to the significance of things.that resulted in a Facebook post and then a haiku:

SUMMIT SERIES SUMMARY

seventy-two?          ew.

iced dross; sloppy & slow-mo…

                       but: a win’s a win.

And for what it’s worth, I think Henderson SHOULD BE IN the Hockey Hall of Fame.
